When it comes to flea control on your pet, the most important thing to think about is the overall health of your pet and the condition of their skin. The key to healthy skin is a healthy diet. In recent years the upsurge of natural, fresh and raw foods on the market is testament to how much of an important part this is. Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins combined with essential fatty acids are needed for a healthy coat. Probiotics and digestive enzymes aid good digestion which also can affect the skin.
In flea season, which is most common from spring into summer, but also a factor during warm autumnal and winter days in a heated home, continued prevention through the regular use of a flea product remains paramount to maintain your pet’s health and stop infestations, which can easily transfer from your pet, to your sofa, to your bed!
Chemical flea treatments
There are many spot-on treatments on the market – from many big brand names that we all know and have no doubt used at some time or other. They sell a lot because of the successful results they achieve, but when you start looking into the ingredients small print, it becomes quite scary.
Many of the active ingredients in these solutions include pesticide chemicals that can cause serious health problems in animals. Such as fipronol (this may over-stimulate the nervous system of a parasite killing 98-100% of adult fleas within 24 hours, but can also cause excessive salivation, vomiting, lethargy or hyperglycaemia in your dog), permethrin (can cause agitation, restlessness or intense itchiness) or methoprene (can cause skin irritation). Do you really want to take that risk for your pet?
Natural flea treatments
The good news is, there are also many natural flea treatments on the market too – and we have absolute respect for all the brands who have worked hard to find the natural ingredients that do the job without the fear of compromising the health of your pet.
Our natural ingredients:
Catnip - It might be surprising to read, but this is one of the natural ingredients we use for flea prevention. So long associated with use in toys to stimulate our feline friends, however, as it comes from the mint family of plants, it also acts as an insect repellent and is proven to be more effective than DEET. Its active component nepetalactone triggers a chemical response in fleas that makes them feel pain.
Quassia bark - traditionally used as a digestive to treat fever, but it is also an effective treatment against hair parasites such as fleas and lice having a bitter taste and natural expulsion properties that fleas hate. It also has anti-inflammatory effects.
Lemongrass - This essential oil is a natural insect repellent.
Lavender - This essential oil is calming for pets and off-putting for insects.
Rosemary – This tincture is an excellent natural flea, lice and tick deterrent.
There are many other natural ingredients that also perform exceptionally well when it comes to flea prevention, but our recipe focusses on the perfect balance of only what is necessary to get the job done.
Trumpet blowing time
We are behind the white-label development and production of one of the market leading natural flea treatments too, so we have a history and a knowledge that precedes our brand ;)
